On June 22, 2024, the South African rugby team demonstrated their dominance with a commanding 41-13 victory over Wales at Twickenham Stadium in the Qatar Airways Cup.

This match marked the men in green and gold’s return to the field after their triumphant Rugby World Cup campaign in 2023, and they showed no signs of rustiness as they overwhelmed a youthful Welsh side.

The First Half

The Springboks started the game with a bang, scoring within the first four minutes through centre Jesse Kriel, who finished off a sweeping attack. Fly-half Jordan Hendrikse, making his debut start, converted to give the Springboks an early 7-0 lead.

Wales responded quickly with a penalty from Sam Costelow, but the Springboks extended their lead with a penalty try awarded after Wales collapsed a maul, resulting in a yellow card for Aaron Wainwright.

Despite being down to 13 players at one point, Wales managed to fight back, with Dewi Lake scoring a try converted by Costelow. Two penalties from Costelow brought Wales within a point by half-time, trailing 14-13.

The Second Half

Welsh fans’ hopes of a dramatic upset were quickly snuffed out, as the opening of the second half saw the Springboks pull away decisively. A controversial try by Makazole Mapimpi early on, despite a suspected forward pass, set the tone.

Wales were punished for their poor discipline, as Hendrikse and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu tallied up penalties, and tries from Bongi Mbonambi and debutant Edwill van der Merwe sealed the win.

Van der Merwe, making his Test debut at the ripe age of 28, was named man of the match for his impressive performance, including his try in the final minutes.

South Africa’s Performance

This match highlighted the depth and strength of the Springbok squad. Fans were delighted by key players like Malcolm Marx and Vincent Koch, earning his 50th test cap, as they made significant contributions after returning from injuries.

The inclusion of new talents like Feinberg-Mngomezulu and van der Merwe also indicated a bright future for South African rugby. The Springboks’ ability to bring on impactful replacements showcased their tactical flexibility and squad depth, which proved too much for Wales to handle.

Wales’ Performance

For this young and inexperienced Wales team, the match was a mixed bag. They showed resilience, particularly in the first half, but were ultimately overpowered by the Springboks’ physicality, skill, and squad experience.

The Welsh team, led by captain Dewi Lake, had moments of promise but struggled to maintain their intensity throughout the game.

Looking Ahead

The Springboks’ next challenge will be against the world’s no. 2 ranked team, Ireland, with this victory setting a positive tone for their upcoming fixtures. The performance against Wales demonstrated their readiness to defend their status as the top team in world rugby and provided a glimpse of the new talents emerging in the South African ranks.

This match was a testament to the Springboks’ strength and strategic acumen under the guidance of Rassie Erasmus and Jacques Nienaber, ensuring they remain a formidable force on the international stage.
