Tanzanian giants Simba SC and Young Africans have a new date for their crunch Mainland Premier League match.

Originally set to face off this coming weekend, the two Dar es Salaam clubs have shifted their derby due to a tight schedule from competing in the CAF Champions League.

Both exited the continental competition at the quarterfinal stage this past weekend, with Simba losing 2-0 (3-0 on aggregate) to Egypt’s Al Ahly, while Yanga were edged on penalties by South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns after a goalless stalemate over two legs.

The teams will now have their 112th meeting since 1965, as they clash at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Saturday 20 April, with kick-off at 5pm Eastern African time.

The match is a key one for Simba, as they not only look to get themselves back into the title race (they are third, seven points adrift of leaders Yanga and having played a game less), but also avenge a heavy 5-1 defeat suffered at the hands of their rivals when the teams last met in November 2023. It was also the first Kariakoo derby for Simba’s new coach Abdelhak Benchika.

Tanzanian Premier League official Karim Boimanda has assured fans that the league is working hard to ensure a great show.

“The preparations of the encounter have already started and the body will continue to give its updates as the day draws near,” he is quoted by The Citizen.
