SuperSport United’s patience with Gavin Hunt has finally run out after the two parties agreed to go their separate ways on Friday.

Hunt etched his name into South African football’s annals after guiding Matsatsantsa to three successive top-flight titles during his first stint at the Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe Stadium.

However, the 60-year-old failed to reach those lofty heights following his return to the club in July 2022, although he had to manage one of the smallest squads in the Betway Premiership.

His cause wasn’t helped by SuperSport continually selling their best players during his two-and-a-half year stint and he departs with the team sitting second from bottom in the league, one point adrift of safety with nine matches left to play in the season.

Hunt’s final game in charge was a 3-1 defeat to TS Galaxy on March 11 and the Tshwane giants had only won one of their nine games since the turn of the year.

Andre Arendse has been appointed interim coach, with Grant Johnson promoted from his role as goalkeeper coach to assistant.

“SuperSport United FC and Head Coach Gavin Hunt have reached a mutual agreement to part ways with immediate effect,” the club announced in a statement on Friday.

“The board and management of the Club have expressed their appreciation to Hunt for the work he had done as Head Coach over many years.

“We remain convinced that Gavin still has much to contribute to South African and African football given his extensive knowledge and experience and will always remain grateful for the impact he has had on the club and South African football. We wish Gavin well in his future endeavours.

“Andre Arendse will serve as an interim Head Coach with Goalkeeper Coach Grant Johnson as his assistant.”
