The world of football is still in shock and mourning following the sudden and tragic death of Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his younger brother, André Silva, 25, in a fatal car crash on Thursday.

Jota, a beloved and dynamic attacker, had just helped Liverpool clinch the Premier League title in the 2024–25 season and was fresh off an emotional win with Portugal over rivals Spain in a dramatic penalty shootout during his final international appearance in June.

His brother, André Silva, was also a professional footballer who played in Portugal for Gondomar S.C. and F.C. Penafiel.

Global tributes pour in for a fallen star

In the wake of Jota’s passing, tributes have flooded in from around the globe, led by Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo, NBA icon LeBron James, and former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Jota’s longtime teammate on the Portuguese national team, shared a heartfelt tribute on X:

Audience Feedback Survey

“It doesn’t make sense. Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you had gotten married. To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in Peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.”

LeBron James, part-owner of Liverpool FC through Fenway Sports Group, expressed his grief with a message of love and support to the Jota family, saying he was “heartbroken” by the news.

Jürgen Klopp, who coached Jota at Liverpool, posted an emotional tribute on Instagram:

“A fantastic player and an even better human being. His energy, his smile, his passion — irreplaceable. My heart goes out to his family and to André’s. This is a loss that goes beyond football.”

Liverpool, Portugal, football community mourn

Liverpool FC, the Portuguese Football Federation, and the Premier League all issued statements honoring Jota’s legacy on and off the pitch. Current and former Liverpool players flooded social media with messages of remembrance, many sharing personal stories and photos that celebrated Jota’s vibrant personality and fierce competitiveness.

Silva remembered by former club

F.C. Penafiel, where André Silva once played, issued a moving statement mourning the loss of both brothers:

“The Futebol Clube Penafiel expresses its deepest regret for the tragic death of André Silva and his brother Diogo Jota, victims of a travel accident that occurred in the last hours.

The loss of two lives, both young and linked to the world of football, fills us with pain and consternation. In this difficult moment, the Futebol Clube Penafiel addresses the most sincere condolences to family, friends and all those who shared with André and Diogo moments of life and passion of sport.

“The club will declare official mourning and pay tribute at upcoming sporting events. Rest in peace.”

A career and life cut short

Jota had been with Liverpool for five seasons, becoming a fan favorite known for his tireless work rate, technical flair, and clutch performances.

His contributions helped return Liverpool to domestic dominance, highlighted by their 2024–25 Premier League triumph.

Internationally, he earned acclaim with Portugal, earning dozens of caps and scoring key goals. His final match, a victory against Spain in a penalty shootout, now serves as a poignant closing chapter to an inspiring career.
