Nara Smith is opening up about the pushback she’s received to her promotion of the ‘tradwife’ way of life.

The ‘tradwife’ lifestyle, which has been a growing trend on social media, showcases women who don clothes in the 1950s style while embracing traditional gender roles and preparing homemade meals.

The fashion model and influencer, 22, told the outlet that she’s had ‘a really hard time’ digesting the concept of the ‘the trad wife, whatever it is,’ according to a profile of Smith published in Harper’s Bazaar Thursday.

The Bloemfontein, South Africa-born beauty, who was raised in Germany, said that she’s ‘a working mom’ and that the posts she put up on social media are ‘really not that deep,’ regardless of the controversies over it.

Smith has been wed to fellow model Lucky Blue Smith, 26, since February of 2020, and the couple are parents to three children: daughter Rumble Honey, three, son Slim Easy, two, and daughter Whimsy Lou Smith, four months.

Smith is also stepmother to her husband’s daughter Gravity, seven, from his previous relationship to model Stormi Bree.

The IMG Models-signed beauty told the outlet that she’s still learning about herself and can’t put a label on what it is she does and the values she’s seeking to put on display.

‘I never know what to say when people ask me [what I do], because technically, yes, I create content,’ said Smith, who has 9.3 million TikTok followers and 4 million Instagram followers. ‘But then I’m just living my life and sharing that with people, which a lot of people do.’

Smith’s rapid rise to fame – which has fans asking her to take to a reality TV platform – has been buoyed by her clips in which she makes things from scratch, with ASMR qualities for Internet users.

The clips have garnered a measure of controversy at times, according to the profile.

Some commenters are critical of her embracing the cliché of a traditional housewife and nostalgia toward a timeframe when women’s rights had not evolved to the point where they are now.

Smith said of her critics, ‘For the sake of my mental health, I can’t indulge in that. I can’t keep correcting people or read things and get frustrated.’

Her spouse Lucky defended her in the publication, saying that her online haters are coming from a place of envy.

‘People are seeing her gaining some success from everything she’s doing,’ Lucky said. ‘If you have someone who doesn’t know you at all and they’re making a video about you online with things that are not true, you can just tell it’s coming from a place of jealousy. Let’s call it what it is.’

Smith said in the piece that she is expressing the essence of her individuality and hopes that viewers find value in it.

‘To me, it’s all about just putting what I love out there, and whoever can resonate with that and take something away from it – that’s what I want to do,’ Smith said. ‘Sometimes my outfits aren’t the most practical, but then again fashion isn’t always practical.

‘That’s what I do. I post videos of me cooking for my kids and my husband. It’s really not that deep.’

In the piece, Smith described herself as ‘a girly girl’ and a ‘working mom who gets to go about her day in a very different way than’ a person with ‘a normal nine-to-five job’ would.

She added, ‘You don’t see me getting on a plane, hopping to New York, modeling, coming back — all while I have a newborn – paying bills, filming content, getting my kids dressed.

‘Being put into a certain box, just because people think that I’m slaving away, is so weird to me.’
