Michelle Obama and Steven Spielberg took their friendship to the next level as they twinned in matching denim outfits while aboard his $250million superyacht.

The former first lady, 61, has been vacationing on his 357-foot boat with her husband, Barack Obama, off the coast of Portofino, Italy, over the last few days.

But on Tuesday the couple said their goodbyes to Spielberg and his wife, Kate Capshaw, as they headed back to the shore via a tender.

Michelle dressed fashionably for the outing, donning baggy jeans, with a black T shirt tucked in, and a chic double layer denim coat.

She accessorized with dark shades and a flashy belt, and held a black sweater over her arm.

Barack, 64, for his part, opted for some white trousers, a black top, brown bomber jacket, and black sneakers. He held a black briefcase in his hand.

The acclaimed director, 78, who was seen waving and shouting to the couple as they left, wore a very similar outfit to Michelle’s.

He sported jeans, a black top, and denim jacket as well, except he added some flare to the look with a tan sunhat.

His wife-of-34-years Capshaw, 71, kept it casual in some jeans, white blouse, and sunglasses.

The foursome was seen enjoying some time together on the deck of his boat before Michelle and Barack departed.

Photographers caught the former president shaking hands with some of the crew as Michelle warmly embraced a woman who appeared to also be staff of the water vessel.

The couple then got onto a smaller boat that took them back to shore, accompanied by an array of security.

Despite arriving on the trip separately – a solo Michelle was photographed boarding the vessel ahead of her husband, who came hours later looking downcast – a source previously told the Daily Mail exclusively that it was exactly what they needed.

‘They needed this trip more than they thought they did, it [was] a really nice time to be able to lay low and be together,’ dished the insider. ‘Everyone was in great spirits.’

Their vacation comes days after the former president made a startling marriage confession.

During an appearance at the Jefferson Educational Society event in Erie, Pennsylvania, earlier this month, Barack joked that he had spent much of his time since leaving office trying to appease his wife, which he described as ‘challenging’.

‘I have spent over eight years now trying to dig myself out of a hole with Michelle,’ he said.

‘And that’s been challenging, but I feel like I’m making progress. I’m almost breaking even at the moment.’

This marks the first time the couple had been seen together since they sat down for an astonishing joint interview on Michelle’s podcast back in July, during which they finally addressed the state of their marriage amidst ongoing divorce rumors.

‘What, you guys like each other?’ Michelle’s brother and co-host Craig Robinson joked, before Michelle replied: ‘Oh yeah, the rumor mill.’

‘She took me back!’ Barack light-heartedly chimed in, adding: ‘It was touch and go for awhile.’

The former first lady said it was nice to be in the same room as her husband, sassily telling her brother: ‘When we aren’t, folks think we’re divorced.’

Michelle then made a heartfelt admission about her relationship with her husband of almost 33 years.

‘There hasn’t been one moment in our marriage where I thought about quitting my man,’ she said passionately.

‘And we’ve had some really hard times. So we had a lot of fun times, a lot of adventures, and I have become a better person because of the man I’m married to.’

Barack admitted he missed a lot of the speculation, and he was largely unaware of what people were saying.

‘These are the kinds of things that I just miss, right? So I don’t even know this stuff’s going on,’ he confessed.

‘And then somebody will mention it to me and I’m all like, “what are you talking about?”

The Obamas have been married for almost 33 years and share daughters, Malia, 26, and Sasha, 24.

Speculation surrounding the Obama’s relationship began when Michelle skipped several high-profile events, including Donald Trump’s inauguration and former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral.
