A
fter a questionably gilded Met affair, it seemed the effect lingered a bit longer with Hollywood celebrities reminiscing over their statement-making ensembles and perhaps, catching a breath or two from the buzz. Needless to say, the Billboard Awards, which was held on May 15th, had a few celebs break the inertia. While last week’s social life might have soft-pedaled in Hollywood, the few who stepped out sure didn’t do so in understated outfits.

Yet for last week’s best dressed, we give this sartorial round to African celebrities and style stars as they showed up to the #AMVCA event in ornate attires that pushed beyond the limits and readily delivered flamboyance. The style stars all held it down with overflowing trains, ruffles, feathers, crystal embellishments, and voluminous silhouettes. It was a herculean task drawing up this list, as most looks gave exactly what they set out to give.
The looks
Musician Doja Cat looked like she owned the galaxies in a head-to-toe Schiaparelli look as she attended the Billboards Award last night. The slinky dress, although simple, held on to a pointed neckline and golden nipple plates placed below a see-through bandeaux were the perfect match for the golden planet-themed purse and shoes with a semblance of golden feet. Simply put, this look on Doja passed the vibe check in golden colors.
Star girl Tracee Ellis Ross posed for the gram with a caption that spelled, “#working” in a Dries Van Noten neon print dress, paired with a bejeweled detailing bearing the semblance of a see-through vest. Ross had on a loosely braided updo with a barely-there glam, and this simplistic outtake didn’t tone down the pleasing effect of the entire look.
Nollywood actress Osas Ighodaro was THAT girl at the AMVCA where she bagged the Best Dressed and Best Actress awards. The actress lived up to this acknowledgment in a beguiling Veekee James number. The ruffled train, snatched corset, two-toned hue, and all-over glimmering detailing upped the style ante. Big Brother Naija star Erica Nlewedim was also a sight to behold in a striking metallic green number by Polish bridal designer Slubne Atelier at the AMVCA Awards. A stellar ensemble for a star girl. African celebrities fashion.
Check out last week’s best fashion moments as seen on Black and African celebrities around the world…
