Cape Town's favourite mountain

Table Mountain takes centre stage in October as the Table Mountain Cableway, one of the Cape Town Big 6 attractions, celebrates its 93rd birthday.

All kinds of wonderful!

The cable car has come a long way from the 10-minute trip in a wooden, tin-roofed structure from back in the day. Now it takes just 5 minutes for a one-way trip and comes with jaw-dropping 360-degree panoramic views with an often informative and sometimes hilarious commentary to set the mood for your adventure.

Despite being one of the most recognisable mountain ranges in the world, thanks to how photogenic she is, locals often find that ticket prices are out of reach for the average man.

To make it more accessible, the Table Mountain team introduced the free birthday ticket offering, which they have recently extended to encompass your birthday month. You can now claim and use your birthday ticket ANYTIME within the month of your birth – you don’t need to wait until your birthday week anymore. This offer applies to anyone between the ages of 4-17 (classified as kids) and adults (18 and over). Kids under the age of 4 ride the cable car for free when accompanied by an adult with a ticket, obviously!

Table Mountain October Special

To celebrate its 93rd birthday, Table Mountain Cableway has made it even easier for locals to enjoy the mountain. South Africa ID document holders pay R200 for their return ticket, while kids (with SA birth certificates) pay R100 to ride Monday – Friday from 1 – 31 October 2022. If you’re lucky enough to celebrate your birthday this month, you could benefit from your birthday ticket and invite loved ones to celebrate with you at this special price.

We have been fortunate enough to enjoy Table Mountain numerous times and even invested in the Cable Card for a year (before Z2 turned 4), where we got to ride the cable car every few months for an entire year. The Cable Card is still near the top of my annual Christmas wish list and is easily the best investment for a local who loves exploring the outdoors.

More than just the tabletop

There is more to Table Mountain than just the tabletop, though. While the viewing points and pathways are all spectacular, many locals don’t seem to explore much further than what initially meets the eye. The next time you visit, why not join one of the free walking tours or take a walk to one of the 5 dams?

Another option is to hike to Maclear’s Beacon – something we’ve only done once (with very young kids in flip-flops – not recommended unless you have a death wish) but which we plan to do again before Z1 turns 18 next month.

Well, I must quickly find some space in our diary so we can take advantage of this special offer (even if it means I need to take some leave). We hope to see you on the mountain!
