“Ne Zha 2”, the recently released Chinese animated blockbuster film, continues to shatter global movie records as screenings expand worldwide.

The film, released on January 29 during the Chinese New Year festivities, has already surpassed 13 billion yuan (around 1.8 billion dollars) in total box office revenue – including special screenings, pre-sales and overseas earnings, according to Maoyan Professional, China’s leading movie-ticketing platform.

It is currently the highest-grossing animated film globally, placing it among the top 8 highest-grossing films of all time.  The success of “Ne Zha 2” has attracted significant international attention and it has already been released in multiple overseas markets, including North America, Australia and New Zealand.

Based on the tale of Nezha, an iconic boy god from Chinese mythology, the film’s captivating storyline and visuals have contributed to its steadily growing global recognition from industry professionals. The film has also struck a chord with audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds as well. As of February 22, “Ne Zha 2” holds an 8.3/10 rating on IMDb and boasts a 99 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

According to the movie’s official social media account, its release on Chinese big screens has been extended until March 30 amid sustained interest from movie lovers.  Additionally, “Ne Zha 2”-themed merchandises, including stuffed toys, blind boxes and decorations, have gained great popularity among consumers and some items have been sold out completely.
