Hearts of Oak have confirmed the appointment of Slavko Matic as their new head coach after he signed a two-year contract with the FA Cup holders this week.

The Phobians have come in for criticism following their decision to sack Samuel Boadu last month in the lead-up to their CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

Assistant coach David Ocloo oversaw the second-round qualifier against AS Bamako, who eliminated the Ghana Premier League club 3-1 on aggregate over two legs.

However, Matic will take charge of his first training session on Friday and the chairman of the board, Togbe Afede XIV, has called on the club’s supporters to rally behind the Serbian.

“Slavko Matic was highly recommended by our contact in the Common Value Club Alliance (CVCA). I appeal to all Phobians to support him as that will also mean supporting Hearts and Ghana football,” Afede said in a press conference at Matic’s unveiling.

The 46-year-old has worked with teams in Europe, China and the Arabian Peninsula, and he’s looking to make his mark in Africa.

“I am really grateful to the Board Chairman and the rest of the management members for the opportunity,” Matic said.

“Africa is a big challenge and Hearts of Oak is a big club and I want to make a big impact here. We will also want to find a way to play good football in order to give every player the opportunity to play and to showcase their talent.”
