The Ahmedabad-based singer-songwriter follows up her 2019 EP ‘I’ve Never Been Happier To Be Lost’

Although it’s been just over two years since the release of Meera Desai’s exceptional debut EP I’ve Never Been Happier To Be Lost, the Ahmedabad-based singer-songwriter has been busy as ever, pandemic notwithstanding.

A regular contributor and team member at Compass Box Studio, freelance vocal instructor and part of indie band jazz band Heat Sink, Desai released a new single last month called “Keys.” The laidback, enchanting song leans on nostalgia as well as introspection, staying true to the artist’s jazz, soul and pop influences. “This song was born during the lockdown, when I saw my parents sorting out all of the keys they had gathered over the years — unsure of what each one even locked,” the artist says in a statement. The music video, directed by Yuvan Seth, shows Desai at home amidst several books, photos and memories that she sorts through as she offers metaphors of things locked away, healing and self-belief.

Composed, written and produced at Compass Box Studio with producer Raag Sethi, the song also features drummer Shivang Kapadia and Harmish Joshi contributing clarinet and saxophone parts. The end of the track swells to include over 20 voices from Desai’s friends and family uttering the phrase, “We give everything away.” Desai adds, “[It’s] all of the people I wanted to surround myself with but could not: voices from all over the world saying one phrase.”

Watch the video for “Keys” below. Stream the song here.
