    Fury as BBC includes transgender woman activist Rukshana Kapali on its annual list of 100 ‘inspiring and influential’ women

    Anna Huttunen (Carbon impact tech expert)

    Anna Huttunen hails from Finland and has pushed for greener and more efficient mobility in the city of Lahti, which was named the European Green Capital in 2021. She was responsible for leading the city’s carbon trading model, an app which allows citizens to earn credits when they use environmentally friendly transport. 

    Esi Buobasa (Fishmonger)

    Esi Buobasa is a leading fishmonger in her village in Ghana and was behind the setting up of an association aimed at helping fisherwomen in the region as climate change impacts their source of income. The alliance now has around 100 members who make financial contributions to those in need. 

    Yael Braudo-Bahat (Peace activist)

    Yael Braudo-Bahat is a co-director at Women Wage Page (WWP) which seeks a negotiation and political resolution to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. 

    Sofia Kosacheva (Firefighter)

    Russian firefighter Sofia Kosacheva has created a community to train volunteers to help tackle wildfires in her home country, leading to the development of over 25 volunteer organisations across Russia. 

    Ulanda Mtamba (Campaigner against child marriage)

    Ulanda Mtamba was influential in changing the status quo in Malawi by graduating from university. She now advocates to enforce laws which protect girls from early marriage, and currently works as Malawi’s country director for AGE Africa, which seeks equal access to secondary school for all girls. 

    Sarah Ott (School teacher)

    American school teacher Sarah Ott is the climate change ambassador with the National Centre for Science Education. She now uses climate change as a means of teaching science to her students, and to raise awareness of environmental issues in her community. 

    Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka (Vet) 

    Award-winning vet and conservationist Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka is doing ground breaking work in Uganda to save the country’s endangered mountain gorillas. She is the founder and CEO of Conservation Through Public Health, and has helped to increase the number of mountain gorillas from 300 to 500 in the last 30 years, taking them off the critically endangered species list. 

    Trần Gấm (Biogas business owner)

    Business owner Trần Gấm oversees a project which helps farmers in Vietnam cut costs by turning cow and pig manure, water hyacinth and other waste into biogas, a sustainable energy source, which can then be used for running households. 

    Michelle Obama (Attorney, author and campaigner)

    The former First Lady is the founder of the Girls Opportunity Alliance, which supports organisations which work to provide education to girls around the world. It builds on Let Girls Learn, an initiative she launched during her spell as first lady, to help girls access a quality education. 

    Bianca Williams (Athlete)

    European and Commonwealth 4x100m gold medallist Bicana Williams represented the UK and Northern Ireland as captain for the 2023 European Team Championships. In July 2020, she and fellow athlete Ricardo Dos Santos were stopped and searched by police officers, leading them to launch an official complaint, accusing the police of racial profiling. Two officers were found guilty of gross misconduct and were sacked as a result. 

    Qiyun Woo (Storyteller)

    Qiyun Woo uses social media to share her ideas about climate change via her online platform, The Weird and Wild. She also co-hosts an environmental podcast focused on South East Asia called Climate Cheesecake and is a National Geographic Young Explorer. 

    Jennifer Uchendu (Mental Health Advocate)

    Jennifer Uchendu founded SustyVibes, an organisation which aims to make sustainability actionable and relatable for young people. Her most recent work has focused on exploring the impact of climate change on the mental health of Africans. 

    Marijeta Mojasevic (Disability rights activist)

    Marijeta Mojasevic works as a youth adviser and disability rights activist, using her platform to challenge attitudes and behaviours towards people with neurological disorders. She now draws upon her own experience of having two strokes while in high school to challenge prejudice. 

    Astrid Linder (Professor of traffic safety)

    Engineer Astrid Linder has lead a project to create the word’s first average-sized female crash test dummy, which takes into account the morphology of women’s bodies. 

    Elham Youssefian (Adviser in climate and disability)

    Elham Youssefian is a human rights lawyer who advocates for the inclusion of people with disabilities when addressing climate change. She plays an instrumental role in the International Disability Alliance, a global network which represents people with disabilities. 

    Iryna Stavchuk (Climate policy adviser)

    Iryna Stavchuk is the Ukraine programme manager at the European Climate Foundation, where she works to design green and climate-proof solutions for the post-war recovery of her country. 

    Arati Kumar-Rao (Photographer)

    Independent photographer Arati Kumar-Rao documents the changing landscape caused by climate change with the help of a camera. She has crisscrossed the subcontinent of her home country of India for over a decade to document how the environment is changing and its impact. 

    Hosai Ahmadzai (TV presenter)

    TV presenter Hosai Ahmadzai is one of very few female news anchors broadcasting in Afghanistan, particularly in the wake of the Taliban takeover in August 2021. She continues to work at Shamshad TV despite safety concerns.

    Olena Rozvadovska (Children’s rights advocate)

    Olena Rozvadovska is the co-founded of Voices of Children, a charity which provides psychological support to young people. It started as an initiative back in 2019, four years after Olena volunteered near the frontline in Donbas.

    Susanne Etti (Sustainable tourism expert)

    Susanne Etti works as the global environmental and impact manager at Intrepid Travel, where she has successfully built the first tour operator with science-based carbon reduction targets. 

    Georgia Harrison (TV personality)

    The TV personality, known for appearing on Love Island and The Only Way is Essex, led a campaign to amend the UK’s online safety bill to make revenge porn easier to prosecute after she became a victim of the crime herself.

    Natalie Psaila (Medical doctor)

    Natalie Psaila helps women in Malta who need information and advice around abortion. She is the co-founder of Doctors for Choice Malta, which advocates decriminalisation and the legalisation of abortion and better access to contraception in the country. 

    Chila Kumari Burman (Artist)

    Artist Chila Kumari Burman uses her work to discuss important topics such as gender, representation and cultural identity. Her work has most recently been featured at the Blackpool Illuminations. 

    Sumini (Forest Manager)

    Sumini leads a Village Forest Management Unit (LPHK) to discourage illegal logging and hunters who threaten Sumatran tigers, pangolins and other wildlife which is at risk. 

    Gloria Steinem (Feminist Leader)

    Gloria Steinem is a feminist leader who has worked on equality issues for decades in her capacity as an activist, journalist, writer and lecturer. She co-founded Ms. Magazine in the 1970s, which is considered to be the first periodical in the US to bring the women’s rights movement into the mainstream media. 

    Fabiola Trejo (Social psychologist)

    Social psychologist Fabiola Trejo works to research social inequity, gender-based violence and the political power of sexual pleasure, while seeking to promote sexual justice for women. 

    Harmanpreet Kaur (Cricketer)

    Harmanpreet Kaur became the first Indian woman to be named as one of Wisden’s five Cricketers of the Year this year. She was the captain of the India women’s national cricket team, and led the team to a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. 

    Monica McWilliams (Former politician and peace negotiator)

    Monica McWilliams player a crucial role as a lead negotiator in Northern Ireland’s Good Friday Agreement. She also co-founded the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition, a political party which introduced provisions to the peace treaty, which was signed 25 years ago. 

    Camila Pirelli (Olympic athlete)

    Track and field Olympic athlete Camila Pirelli is an EcoAthlete Champion. She uses her sports platform to encourage people to discuss climate change and encourages them to take action to reduce their carbon emissions. 

    Carolina Díaz Pimentel (Journalist)

    Journalist Carolina Diaz Pimentel specialises in neurodivergence and mental health coverage. She also works to end the stigma which people with psychosocial disabilities face and is the founder or several projects which raise awareness of neurodiversity. 

    Susan Chomba (Scientist)

    Scientist Susan Chomba shares her experience and expertise with governments and researchers to build more resilient communities in the face of climate change. Her primary goals are protecting forests, restoring landscapes and transforming Africa’s food systems. 

    Xu Zaozao (Egg freezing campaigner)

    Xu Zaozao is an advocate for single women’s reproductive rights and bodily autonomy. Her legal challenge to a hospital in Beijing over the rights of unmarried women in China to freeze their eggs was a world first and has been studied around the globe. 

    Neema Namadamu (Disability rights campaigner)

    Disability rights activist Neema Namadamu founded an organisation which uses education and technology to give women a voice and teach them to advocate for their own rights. From the Democratic Republic of Congo, she aims to improve living conditions for women and teenage girls in her home country. 

    Rina Gonoi (Former military officer)

    Former military officer Rina Gonoi launched a public campaign calling for accountability after she experienced sexual harassment while serving. As a result, the military conducted an internal investigation which led to more than 100 other complaints of harassment and shed light on an ongoing issue.
