can you travel in uganda now

August 19, 2021 by Val Bowden

Can you travel to Uganda right now–even during COVID-19?

That’s such a great question. And to find out, I spoke to my Gerald at Adventure Afrika to get a local’s inside perspective.

Unfortunately, it’s rainy season in Ethiopia, and every time it rains, my internet cuts out. So half of our conversation didn’t record right! However, we got all the main points covered. Watch the video and keep reading for everything you need to know to travel in Uganda now.

Watch this quick 5-minute video!

Entry Requirements for Uganda

Even though I’m American, I usually check the UK Travel Entry & Warnings website. However, I recommend you also check out the US State Department’s travel warnings or whatever country you are from.

Getting into Uganda or any other country worldwide can change- so make sure you double-check before you go. But right now, you’ll need:

  • Tourist Visa (Uganda tourist visa or East African Tourist Visa)
  • Yellow Fever Vaccination Proof
  • Polio Vaccine Proof
  • One Blank Page on Your Passport for a Stamp
  • Passport must not expire within 6 months
Super sweet kid in Uganda who was so welcoming to me and other backpackers!

COVID-19 Requirements for Uganda

COVID-19 restrictions are also always changing– so check before you go. However, for now you need:

  • Negative PCR test within 72 hours of arriving
  • If you are are from the US, UK, Ethiopia, South Africa, Kenya, South Sudan, Turkey, Tanzania, or UAE, you will need to also pay $65 to get tested upon arrival UNLESS you are fully vaccinated.
  • Negative PCR test within 72 hours of leaving

What to do in Uganda

  • Visit the origin of the Nile River in Jinja
  • White-Water Raft on the Nile (I did it through Nile Explorers)
  • Trek Gorillas (check this out if you’re not sure if trekking with gorillas in Uganda is better than Rwanda)
  • Visit all the lakes!!
  • Eat a rolex (it’s a chapati filled with egg made on the street– sooo tasty and cheap)
The start of my gorilla trekking! So beautiful!!

What’s a backpacking route in Africa that includes Uganda?

I visited Uganda while I was backpacking the Cape to Cairo Route. However, you can also travel it if you’re doing my Best of East Africa Route.

Not sure which route in Africa is right for you? Take my free 2-minute Backpacking Route in Africa quiz to find out!
