Ethiopian Airlines, in collaboration with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), officially launched Air Congo on Monday.

Ethiopian Airlines CEO Mesfin Tasew described the inauguration as a “historic milestone” in the aviation history of the DRC, emphasizing its potential to transform air travel in the Central African nation.

“Our partnership with the Democratic Republic of Congo to establish Air Congo reflects our commitment to liberalize and to transfer technical and managerial skills, train thousands of Congolese aviation professionals, foster a disciplined management culture, and contribute to the growth of the aviation sector in the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” Tasew added.

Tasew outlined key factors critical to the success of Air Congo, stressing the importance of independence and warning that external interference could jeopardize the airline’s future.

“Air Congo must operate as an independent business entity, free from external interference,” Tasew said. “The airline’s management should have the autonomy to mobilize resources and make timely business decisions under the guidance of the board and in compliance with OHADA regulations. This principle has been a cornerstone of Ethiopian Airlines’ success. If there is any interference, Air Congo will be doomed to fail.”

Tasew also called for greater support from the DRC Ministry of Transport, urging it to play an active role in securing traffic rights for Air Congo in other countries.

Air Congo will begin operations with two Boeing 737-800 aircraft, both leased from Ethiopian Airlines. The second aircraft landed at Kinshasa International Airport on Sunday in preparation for the airline’s debut.
