In his biography of Frantz Fanon, intellectual historian David Macey narrates that in August 1955, Algerian National Liberation Front (FLN) leader Moustafa Lacheraf suggested to Fanon that they collaborate on a book on Algeria. Fanon, however, declined, telling Lacheraf that “he [Fanon] was still thinking in ‘European terms.’” Decades later, Lacheraf reaffirmed this, saying that “despite his political sympathies, Fanon was an ‘assimilé,’” still “‘hostage to the European milieu.’” Notably, Lacheraf was not alone in this characterization; similar statements had been made by Tunisian Jewish intellectual Albert Memmi, Algerian psychoanalyst and Fanon student Alice Cherki, and others among Fanon’s contemporaries.…
Ethiopia is a land steeped in ancient history, rooted in religion and guardian to some of the continent’s most impressive mountainous moonscapes. I offered a snapshot of my time in this incredible African country to Sure Travel Journey magazine. Ethiopia. Knocking on Heaven’s Door. Legend has it that in the 12th century an angel asked King Lalibela to construct the remarkable rock-hewn churches that now draw crowds of tourists to Ethiopia each year. In response he recruited the most skilled artisans from around the land to sculpt the arches, domes, windows and passageways, paying for their work with land, salt blocks…
Much is made of the allowance to speak. Yet speech is never outside of the unequal distribution of power that not only constrains who is allowed to speak but also the terms of what can be said and how it will be heard. Particularly in his fiery first publication, Black Skin, White Masks (1952), Frantz Fanon diagnosed how language, French in the context of colonization, was a tool of political and cultural control. For French colonial subjects, the mere fact of speaking their colonizer’s language was subordination. This collision of language and power is perhaps concentrated nowhere more than in…
There is no shortage of indigenous knowledge in Africa. It resides in many sources within any given country including its historical, economic, social, political, ecological, cultural, and technological contexts. Any meaningful effort to incorporate IK in environmental education must utilise these sources. Traditionally, Africans used oral history to pass knowledge about nature from one generation to the next. Through frequent storytelling, they taught children about their community, its mores, beliefs, and behaviours. They did this during late-evening hours under the moonlight or around fireplaces. The storytellers were usually family elders, who became griots: experts profoundly knowledgeable on African tradition, culture…
In Africa the business world and the church have always had different views on doing business. Sometimes Christians see people in business as those who love money, who are corrupt, or people who are too concerned with worldly things. Christians often view the business world as a no-go area, because of the demands and challenges involved. On the other hand, the business world often sees the church as a place for meeting spiritual needs with people who want an easy life and don’t understand how to work hard or make money. When it comes to business and wealth creation, there…

FROM THE ARCHIVE 1: February 2016: Thuli Gamedze – a middle class Black person, as she calls herself – observes the art world in South Africa, specifically in Cape Town, in an attempt to reconcile personal encounters in various art spaces that seem to present multiple tensions between viewer, artist, art object, and gallery structure- due to the latter’s implied neutrality.
