The growing threat of AI to destabilise democracies and consolidate autocracies needs to be proactively addressed. Ademola Oshodi argues that as Africa’s largest democracy and a cultural and digital powerhouse, Nigeria is ideally suited to lead the charge. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a future disruptor; it is a present threat to democracies, which face the dual pressures of internal erosion and external manipulation. Around the world, AI is already being used to weaken democracies, manipulate public opinion, prop up authoritarian regimes, and dampen diplomatic credibility. The risks are not confined to national borders. A recent DW report warned…
So, what are your plans? When this question finally drops from your parent after you’ve covered school, work, the weather, and even the price of tomatoes, you know exactly what they’re asking. They’re politely asking when you’re getting married. African parents rarely speak of emotions directly. In my childhood home, we discussed only the functional bits of life. “Are you hungry?” “Did you pay the school fees?” Heart-to-heart talks were as rare as snow in Nairobi. When it occurred, it felt like walking on needles. Conflicts were simply swept under the proverbial rug. African parents rarely speak of emotions directly.…

When Mary Makokha walks into her office, the atmosphere shifts. Dressed in a bright Ankara dress, her hair buzzed short and dyed pink, she gleefully greets visitors. Her outward demeanor is a far cry from the scourge she has to contend with in her line of work, femicide and gender-based violence. As the founder of the Rural Education and Economic Enhancement Programme, Mary has a front row seat to the impact of deeply rooted patriarchy and silence, enabling violence against women. “We started in 1997, dealing mainly with HIV cases,” she recalls. “But soon we realized widows, children, and girls…
Najaax Harun does not offer easy reflections. She offers portals. Her work is an invitation to stare into the mirror until it dissolves, until the frozen self, heart finally open, thaws and steps through. The World football governing body, FIFA, has sanctioned South Africa for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in a World Cup qualifier. Although South Africa defeated Lesotho 1-0 in the match played on 21 March, FIFA on Monday ruled that South Africa forfeited the match and therefore lost 3-0. The South African Football Association (SAFA) was also ordered to pay a fine of CHF 10,000 to FIFA, while Mokoena was issued a warning. The declaration means South Africa now have 14 points in Group C instead of the 17 they had before the FIFA ruling. Benin and South Africa are…
Photo Credit: Lilian Afegbai/Instagram We love when fashion meets storytelling, and Lilian Afegbai gave us a moment worth bookmarking on the cover of Allure Vanguard. Styled by Swazzi, the actress, producer, and entrepreneur was captured in a gown that felt like a conversation between heritage and modern design. The bodice carried bold blocks of red, white, navy, and orange in an abstract, geometric pattern, while the skirt spun into life with traditional Ankara prints – yellow florals and fine motifs laid against a deep backdrop. Together, the two elements created a look that carried its roots proudly while pushing into…
