Gishora Drum Sanctuary

Gishora is one of the most important sites for historical and cultural experiences in Burundi.

The site also has two ritual drums that were never beaten: Ruciteme (for whom we clear the forest) and Murimirwa (for whom we cultivate). Those two titles are inextricably related to the farming profession and obviously speak to the king’s fertility.

Gishora sanctuary also has regular drums called ‘Ingendanyi’ (retinue), which the Batimbo can use to mark major occasions in the country. A visit to the Gishora Drum Sanctuary is advised for people interested in learning more about Burundi’s customs and the history of the ancient regal periods.

The location features an architectural complex of the traditional royal palace, which is not found anywhere else in the country.

A tour of Gishora gives an opportunity to watch and participate in a 40-minute drum show.
