South Luangwa National Park, Zambia – Prepare to be captivated as the legendary Chichele Presidential reopened its doors with renewed splendour in April 2025. Steeped in history, this iconic Zambian landmark promises to redefine luxury safaris within the breathtaking South Luangwa National Park.

Chichele Presidential Lodge

Originally built in the late 1960s as a private retreat for the late President Kenneth Kaunda, the Lodge has undergone a complete transformation from the ground up. A successful collaboration between the owners, Chichele Safaris, the multi-award-winning Chiawa Safaris, and the world-renowned Fox Browne Creative design team, along with architects Jack Alexander Studio, has revitalised the property.

This isn’t your average safari experience. The new owners, a Zambian family, who visited the Lodge over the years and fell in love with it, wanted the heritage property to be reimagined into a more contemporary experience, but still to honour its history. Passionate about wildlife and its people, it was equally their desire to create a timeless and iconic safari experience, putting Zambia on the map as one of the ultimate wildlife destinations for luxury travellers in Africa.

Africa-inspired, the new Chichele Presidential Lodge unveils ten luxuriously appointed Vista Suites in a soft opening later this year. Situated amidst the awe-inspiring landscapes of South Luangwa National Park, it will offer a unique fusion of history and modern design, while adhering to sustainable practices to preserve this incredible environment for future generations.

A Team of Visionaries, a Realised Dream

The owners engaged the Fox Browne Creative team for their design and build expertise and partnered with Chiawa Safaris for their world-renowned reputation for guiding and safari hospitality. The brief: “Reimagine Chichele Presidential as a contemporary haven yet remain true to the safari ethos, whilst reflecting the property’s heritage and creating an entirely new, more luxurious guest experience.” This exciting transformation promises to deliver just that.

Uncompromising Luxury Meets Unwavering Sustainability

Perched on a magnificent hilltop, Chichele Presidential boasts breathtaking 360-degree views of the Great Rift Valley and the Luangwa River, with an abundance of wildlife sightings.

This exciting addition exemplifies the owner’s unwavering commitment to safari tourism and hospitality. Guests can expect an unparalleled experience where sustainability seamlessly blends with unmatched elegance. Every detail whispers luxury while minimising environmental impact. This isn’t just a safari; it’s an unforgettable adventure for discerning individuals, families (including children of all ages), and groups.

Sustainability is woven into every aspect of Chichele’s redesign, a testament to Fox Browne Creative’s vision. The landscape takes centre stage, influencing both architecture and interiors. By reusing existing foundations, incorporating recycled materials, and utilising energy-efficient systems powered by clean hydropower, Chichele showcases its commitment to environmental responsibility. The result is a layered and tactile experience that feels as natural and authentic as the surrounding wilderness.

Drawing on its Chewa name ‘salt’, the Lodge’s colour palette features a stunning contrast of ebony and ivory. Whist, charred timber accents and subtle touches of copper, Zambia’s signature export, add a further hint of luxury.

More Than Just a Luxury Escape

Days at Chichele unfold at one’s own pace. Choose from exhilarating guided walking safaris and game drives in open 4×4 safari vehicles, or simply relax and unwind in luxurious comfort. Expert guides will unveil the secrets of South Luangwa National Park, bringing guests up close with Zambia’s wildlife. Witness the drama of nature unfold as predators stalk their prey and zebras graze peacefully on the savanna. For younger explorers, educational children’s safaris are also available, fostering a lifelong love for nature.

Back at the Lodge, a tranquil communal deck provides the perfect setting for quiet meditation, sunrise yoga, or simply soaking in the views. For those seeking further indulgence, a state-of-the-art gym and fitness area overlooks a stunning 18.5-meter rim-flow pool, situated away from the main guest areas. For even further pampering, a beautifully appointed, safari treatment room caters for couples or single guests alike.

Each of the ten luxurious Vista Suites is fully air conditioned, including a private butler’s lobby, sitting room, bedroom, bathroom, and covered veranda with a private plunge pool and outdoor shower. Two of these suites, one offering disabled access, are connected by a Safari Lounge with a private sitting room and dining room – ideal for families or friends travelling together. For added convenience, a dedicated golf cart is available. All suites are impeccably appointed, including Wi-Fi.

A highlight of any African safari is dining under a starlit sky. Chichele Presidential Lodge elevates this experience with a variety of enticing menus, featuring the freshest local ingredients sourced from Eden Organics, a Zambian business cultivating organic products. An incredibly heart-warming story, cofounded by Chichele and Puku Ridge staff, and local Zambian women. From sizzling Boma barbecues and tapas evenings to delectable lawn dinners and made-to-order pizzas from a wood-fired oven, these farm-to-table feasts enrich the guest experience.

Chichele Presidential Lodge is more than just a luxurious escape. It actively supports local, effective conservation and community projects in South Luangwa, and above all, represents a culmination of the owners’ dedication to Zambia’s rich heritage and pristine environment. Every element, from the design choices to the curated activities, reflects a deep respect for nature and a commitment to showcasing the wonders of Zambia.
