With 2025 in full swing, the global travel industry continues to adapt to shifting consumer preferences, technological advancements, and even more emphasis on meaningful, sustainable experiences. From extended honeymoons to AI-powered travel planning, these are the key trends set to influence the industry in the coming year.

  1. The Long Honeymoon

No more romantically rushed post-wedding breaks, today’s newlyweds are planning extended honeymoons that blend serenity, adventure, and slow travel. With remote work allowing for greater flexibility, couples are now taking month-long (or even year-long) honeymoons, fully immersing themselves in destinations like Bali, the Amalfi Coast, or South Africa’s Cape Winelands followed by a bucket-list safari expedition to view the Big 5.

  1. Accessible Adventure Travel

Adventure travel shows no signs of slowing down in popularity, with accessibility becoming a priority. Destinations and tour operators are focusing on adaptive equipment, inclusive experiences, and barrier-free itineraries to ensure that everyone, regardless of physical ability, can enjoy the thrill of adventure. Kenya’s Maasai Mara, with its adapted safari vehicles, New Zealand’s extensive accessible hiking trails, and Costa Rica’s adaptive surfing programs are prime examples of this movement.

  1. AI Travel Itineraries

AI is here to stay – Artificial Intelligence is allowing travellers to generate hyper-personalized itineraries based on real-time data, weather conditions, and their personal preferences. AI tools are streamlining the booking process and even making on-the-go adjustments. Forward-thinking destinations like Japan, the UAE, and Morocco are integrating AI into tourism infrastructures to provide seamless, tech-driven experiences.

  1. Cowboy Core Travel

The rise of Western-inspired aesthetics (thanks Yellowstone!) across pop culture is influencing travel trends, with a surge in interest for cowboy and ranch-style experiences. Intrepid travellers are seeking out working ranch stays in Montana, traditional estancias in Argentina’s Pampas, and horseback safaris in some of Africa’s most wildlife rich regions. Equestrian vacations embrace the rugged, romantic spirit of the West while enjoying high-end hospitality from the saddle. Yeehaw!

  1. Nocturism Travel

Mindful travellers, concerned about climate change and overtourism, are exploring destinations after dark to avoid crowds and navigate our world by starlight. Nocturnal tourism, or “nocturism,” includes activities like nighttime safaris in Namibia’s Etosha National Park, Northern Lights tours, guided after-dark museum tours in Paris, and stargazing excursions in Chile’s Atacama Desert, offering unique and immersive experiences away from the daytime rush.

  1. Calmcations

Wellness travel always makes the list of trends to watch, with the “calmcation” taking focus in 2025—these trips create a sense of tranquility; designed to facilitate deep relaxation, disconnection, and mind-body rejuvenation. From healing retreats in the Maldives, mindfulness-focused safaris in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park, to acclaimed alpine spa lodges in Switzerland, travellers looking to escape the noise of modern life have an array of options.

  1. Multigenerational Travel

Family travel is still an ever-growing trend, with more trips including grandparents, parents, and children as families seek to reconnect and escape the pressures of everyday life. Cruising, private villa rentals, and safari lodges are adapting to this demand with single-key accommodations, exclusive use and tailored itineraries. Destinations like Tuscany, the Seychelles, and Tanzania’s Serengeti offer magical settings – a perfect backdrop for meaningful intergenerational connection.

  1. Rural Upskilling

Travellers are seeking immersive, skill-based experiences in rural locations, helping to support local communities while gaining hands-on knowledge. The elegant Babylonstoren homestead in South Africa has unveiled Soetmelksvlei, a historic farm offering immersive experiences that include milking cows, blacksmithing, and carpentry. From traditional bread-making in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains to sustainable farming in the Scottish Highlands and wildlife conservation projects in Zambia, rural upskilling offers authentic cultural exchange and a deeper travel experience.

  1. Luxury Train Travel

With the resurgence of slow travel, luxury train journeys are experiencing a renaissance. High-end rail experiences like South Africa’s Rovos Rail, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, and Japan’s Seven Stars Kyushu transport travellers back in time, combining nostalgia with modern comforts whilst traversing stunning landscapes.

  1. Coolcations

In response to climate change and the desire for unique destinations, travellers are seeking out cooler climates over traditional sun-drenched escapes. The trend of “coolcations” is driving interest in destinations like Iceland, Patagonia, and the remote mountain regions of Lesotho, where travellers can embrace dramatic scenery and adventure-filled experiences while escaping the heat.

The travel industry in 2025 will be defined by innovation, inclusivity, and a renewed emphasis on sustainable, experience-driven travel. Whether catering to the growing demand for extended honeymoons, AI-driven convenience, or transformative rural experiences, travel professionals have a wealth of opportunities to create compelling, future-focused offerings for their clients.

Which trend do you see gaining the most momentum?
