School calendar and CHAN tournament
Schools in Kenya follow a fixed academic calendar published by the Ministry of Education. Schools closed for the holidays on 1 August after the end of term two. According to the 2025 calendar, the third term started on 25 August and will end on 24 October, with national exams following thereafter.
At the same time, Kenya is hosting the 2024 African Nations Championship, also known as CHAN, alongside Tanzania and Uganda. The games have been taking place in different cities across the three countries since 2 August 2025. The competition is set to end on 30 August, with the final game scheduled for that day at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, in Nairobi.
There have been traffic disruptions on matchdays during past CHAN games, and this is expected to continue on the days of the remaining matches.
The post claims that because of the CHAN tournament, schools will delay reopening until 1 September. But is that true? We checked.
No change to reopening date
There has been no official communication about any postponement in the reopening of schools. CHAN matches are being played in August, but there is no connection between the tournament and the school calendar.
According to the schedule, the next game held in Kenya will be the final match on 30 August. Since there are no scheduled CHAN games in Kenya on the actual week that schools reopen, major traffic disruptions are very unlikely.
Furthermore, if the claim were true, it would have been confirmed by the government and media outlets. But this did not happen.
The claim in the TikTok video is false. Schools reopened for the third term on 25 August, as planned.
The claim that the reopening of Kenyan schools has been postponed due to CHAN is false.
