Italian coach Landi wants Eagles job

Italian coach Roberto Landi, who recently expressed interest in the vacant Super Eagles coaching role, says the Nigerian national team is the dream job of every coach, thanks to the quality of talents in the country as well as the passion of Nigerians for the game, The PUNCH reports.

The Nigeria Football Federation is currently in search of a “foreign technical” adviser to take charge of the team following their poor form in the qualification series for the 2026 World Cup, which led to the resignation of ex-international Finidi George after only two games in charge.

Finidi took over in April, stepping into the shoes of Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro — who left after leading the team to the final of the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast – but the former Ajax winger left the job in the wake of the 1-1 draw against South Africa and the 2-1 defeat against Benin Republic in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

While the NFF has denied talks with AFCON-winning coach Herve Renard, names like Antonio Conceicao, Luis Fernandez, Joaquin Caparros, Didier Six and Miguel Herrera have been linked with the job, just as Landi believes he has the pedigree to lead the team.

When asked by our correspondent about his interest in the job, Landi affirmed that it’s the dream of coaches to handle a national team like the Super Eagles.

“Yes, it’s a dream for a coach to train a top senior national team like Nigeria. If you speak with Massimiliano Allegri and some Serie A coaches, if you offer Nigeria, it’s a dream because you represent more than 200 million people and among the top 20 strong countries in the world (not by FIFA rankings),” Landi told The PUNCH.
