How to collaborate with brands as a travel blogger

Around 10 years ago, I was watching an interview with a local travel blogger on television, a rarity in South Africa at the time, and it inspired me to start my own blog. I’ve now been blogging for over 10 years and am grateful for all the opportunities and experiences I’ve had. I’ve done hundreds of collaborations including hotels and safari lodges – both local and international – tourism boards, sightseeing tours and attractions, restaurants, luxury trains, cruises and travel products.

In the competitive world of travel blogging, collaboration is crucial to expanding your reach, elevating your content, engaging with a broader audience, and unlocking exciting opportunities. Here are some effective strategies to help you connect with brands, and tourism boards, ensuring you maximize your potential in the competitive world of travel blogging.

1. Define Your Niche and Audience

Understanding your niche is the first step in attracting the right kind of partnerships. Are you a luxury travel blogger or do you focus on budget travel? Do you explore remote destinations or urban landscapes? Is your focus on a specific geographical location? Once you pinpoint your niche, identify your audience. Knowing their demographics and interests helps in pitching to potential collaborators who share the same target market.

2. Create Your Brand

Your travel blog is your brand. Make it memorable by having a unique logo, a catchy tagline, and a professional website design. Also, develop a strong presence on various social media platforms relevant to your content. As you grow your following and increase engagement, you’ll become more attractive to potential partners.

3. Build a strong online presence

Before reaching out for collaborations, ensure that your online presence is polished and reflective of your travel niche, and that you have a portfolio of high-quality content. This includes well-written blog posts, beautiful photography, and/or videos, and engaging storytelling. Brands and collaborators will be more inclined to work with you if your platforms showcase your expertise and commitment to your audience.

4. Create Quality Content Consistently

Consistency is key. Regular posting shows potential collaborators that you’re serious about your work and can maintain a steady stream of content for their brand.

5. Develop a Media Kit

A media kit is your travel blogging resume and brands often ask for this. Create a professional and visually appealing document that highlights key metrics, demographics, qualifications, past collaborations, and any awards or recognition you’ve received. This tool is crucial for showcasing your value to potential collaborators and making a lasting impression.

6. Network and Make Connections

Networking can open doors to collaborations. Attend travel conferences and expos, join blogging communities, and connect with other travel bloggers. Email PR agencies that operate in your niche and send an introductory email about yourself and your blog to them. Engaging with brands you’re interested in via social media can also get you noticed.

7. Pitch Perfectly

Research and identify brands that align with your travel niche. When you’re ready to reach out for collaborations, craft a compelling pitch that highlights the value you can bring to the brand.  Personalize your email to each brand; show that you’ve done your homework about what they offer and how your brand aligns with theirs. Highlight your blog’s statistics, including traffic, follower count, and engagement rates. Include links to collaborations with similar brands. Be clear about your expectations and what you can offer in return. Building a genuine relationship with brands can lead to long-term collaborations and sponsorships.

To find brands that collaborate with bloggers, conduct Google searches using keywords related to your niche and phrases like “blogger collaboration,” “influencer partnership,” or “brand partnerships.” This can help you discover brands actively seeking collaborations. Then search for the media/marketing/PR contact for the brand. If you can’t find this information on their website, look on LinkedIn or email the company and ask them for the contact details for the relevant person.

8. Offer a Unique Perspective

Brands receive numerous pitches from bloggers. Stand out by offering something unique. Perhaps you have an interesting angle on a destination they want to promote or can create content that appeals to a specific demographic they’re targeting. Show them why collaborating with you will be beneficial.

9. Be Professional

Maintain professionalism in all interactions. Respond promptly to emails, meet deadlines, and deliver on what you’ve promised. Don’t use informal language or make spelling and grammatical errors. Building a reputation for reliability and professionalism goes a long way in securing repeat collaborations and referrals.

10. Understand SEO

Understanding Search Engine Optimization can make you an asset to brands looking for online visibility. Demonstrate your knowledge of keywords, backlinks, and how to create SEO-friendly content that will rank well on search engines. Do courses  if necessary.

11. Know Your Worth

Be clear about what you can offer and don’t undersell yourself. However, be realistic about what you can demand based on your reach and influence. As your blog grows, you can renegotiate terms and ask for more substantial compensation.

12. Follow Up

After sending your pitch, if you haven’t heard back in a week or two, send a polite follow-up email. Express your continued interest in working with them and ask if they need any more information from you.

13. Analyse and Report Your Success

Once you secure a collaboration and execute it, send links to your content to the brand. If possible, analyse the results and report back to the brand as this adds value. Show them the engagement rates, traffic, and any sales or leads generated.

14. Stay Updated

Keep up with trends in both travel and blogging. Brands look for influencers who are current and can engage with audiences in fresh ways.

15. Be Patient and Persistent

Securing collaborations doesn’t happen overnight. It requires patience and persistence. Continue honing your craft, expanding your network, and pitching – success will come. Remember, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

As you can see, getting collaborations as a travel blogger involves a combination of high-quality content creation, strategic networking, professional pitching, and providing unique value to potential partners. By following these steps and consistently working towards enhancing your blog’s appeal, you will increase your success rate in achieving collaborations. Happy travels!
