Today, China and Zimbabwe commemorate 45 years of diplomatic relations, marking a significant milestone in their enduring partnership. Since establishing diplomatic ties in 1980, the two countries have cultivated strong political, economic, and cultural exchanges.

According to the Chinese embassy in Zimbabwe, the foreign ministers of the two nations—Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister of China, and Prof. Dr. Amon Murwira, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Zimbabwe—exchanged congratulatory messages reaffirming their commitment to further enhancing the China-Zimbabwe Comprehensive Strategic Partnership of Cooperation. They expressed their dedication to jointly building a high-level China-Zimbabwe community with a shared future.

In recent developments, Zimbabwe and China have commenced the implementation of key bilateral projects agreed upon during President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s State Visit to Beijing in 2024.

This progress follows the signing of 17 legal instruments, including 14 Memoranda of Understanding and three Letters of Exchange, aimed at expanding collaboration in critical sectors such as investment, trade, infrastructure, mineral resources, renewable energy, and digital technology.

During his visit, President Mnangagwa also participated in the High-Level Meeting on State Governance, where he outlined his vision for an independent African development trajectory.

Reports indicate that Zimbabwe’s trade and investment volumes have surged significantly, with Chinese investments increasing from $445.9 million in 2019 to $3.4 billion in 2023.

Additionally, bilateral engagements have seen China commit over $2.2 billion to major national infrastructure and energy projects in Zimbabwe, with more than 472 investment licenses issued to Chinese entities.

Cultural exchanges have also flourished through numerous initiatives designed to promote mutual understanding. Educational programs, art exhibitions, and cultural festivals have brought Zimbabwe and China closer, fostering friendship and cooperation.
