The best time to see the Great Wildebeest Migration and other wildlife species

– The Great Migration is an annual expedition where over 1.5 million wildebeest, thousands of zebra and hundreds of thousands of gazelles mark their legendary journey embarked on circular movement that is approximately 1,800 miles in the long round trek of the drier lands in Tanzania. The Great Migration in the Serengeti is the second largest terrestrial mammal migration in the world and is secured as one of the seven natural wonders in Africa. The best time to see the migration in Serengeti will depend on what you exactly wish to witness. The best time to witness the wildebeest calving in Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area is between April and May which is usually a rainy season.

If the traveller is interested in witnessing the charismatic event where the mammal grazers try to cross the bloodthirsty river in the north, the Mara River, the best time is between July to December and is usually a dry season, many travellers prefer visiting the country in this periods of the year and the park is usually congested. The migration can, however, be witnessed in all months of the though in most cases there are difficulties in trekking the herds due to high rainfall in this month. Travellers however interested in birding will have to take on the rainy seasons since more birdlife can be spotted during rainy seasons than during the drier seasons. The best time to see wildlife and the Great Migration is during the driest season between June and October since spotting wildlife becomes much easier when the concentrate near the water source and the vegetation is less dense.
