The diplomatic discord between Algeria and France has deepened after Algiers banned French military planes from its airspace, its latest response to a row over visas and critical comments from President Emmanuel Macron.France’s jets regularly fly over the former French colony to reach the Sahel region of western Africa, where its soldiers are helping to battle jihadist insurgents as part of its Operation Barkhane.“This morning when we filed flight plans for two planes, we learned that the Algerians had stopped flights over their territory by French military planes,” an army spokesperson, ColPascal Ianni, told AFP.He said the decision had “slightly…

Morukuru Beach Lodge Review I’d never seen a starfish in its natural environment before. Nor a sea anemone, sea urchin or abalone. Even though I’d been on many land-based wildlife-viewing safaris, this was my first time witnessing the aquarium under the sea and I was mesmerised. As you may have guessed, I am not a snorkeler. We were on a marine walk at De Hoop Nature Reserve with Admire, our eagle-eyed guide from Morukuru Beach Lodge, who was pointing out the vibrant underwater wildlife in the rock pools to us at low tide. And even though it wasn’t the best…

Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen has scored seven goals in five matches for his Italian club NapoliWhen Nigerian Victor Osimhen was sent off on the opening day of the Serie A season, it seemed the forward’s second year with Napoli was heading the same way as his first. But ever since, the 22-year-old has been in sparkling form, much like his club who currently top the Italian league. In his last five games, he has scored seven goals – a tally it took him 25 games to reach, and not until April, last season. In a debut season hampered by injury, suspensions…
Ethiopia declared the officials, who are responsible for coordinating critical humanitarian assistance, “persona non grata” on Thursday, just days after the UN’s aid chief warned that hundreds of thousands of people were starving due to the government’s blockade of aid deliveries.Guterres told the President of the UN Security Council on Friday — in a letter seen by CNN — that the UN would push Ethiopia “to permit these critical UN staff to resume their functions in Ethiopia and grant them the necessary visas.””If the current trajectory continues, I fear for the future of many Ethiopian lives, and indeed for the…

The global goal of fully vaccinating 10% of every country’s population by 30 September was set in May by the World Health Assembly, the world’s highest health policy-setting body. Almost 90% of high income-countries have met this target. Seychelles and Mauritius have fully vaccinated over 60% of their populations, Morocco 48% and Tunisia, Comoros and Cape Verde over 20%. Most of the African countries that have met the goal have relatively small populations and 40% are small island developing states. All these countries have enjoyed sufficient supplies of vaccines, and many could access doses from separate sources in addition to…
By Roxanne ReidI don’t know about you but elephants, especially the young and playful ones, are among my favourite animals to watch. I can do it for hours. To enhance your appreciation of these fascinating animals, find out some interesting facts about elephants when you visit Letaba rest camp in South Africa’s Kruger National Park. The first time we popped in to the Letaba Elephant Hall, or info centre, at Kruger’s Letaba rest camp many years ago, we thought it might be a good way to cool down in air-conditioned luxury for 20 minutes, away from the heat and humidity…
A new tool to map floods around the world, especially those that occur in the Global South, has been launched through a partnership between Google, MapBox, and other players working with a UN University group based in Canada. The World Flood Mapping Tool uses the Google Earth engine combined with nearly 40 years of satellite data, which provides enough geospatial information to do flooding analysis on a global scale. The free, publicly available flood maps take the view to street level at a resolution of 30 meters, the project managers said. Among case studies used to develop the project were…
