Parents are killed in front of their children. As they cry for help, the children die too. Panicked people fleeing attacks become moving targets. Entire communities are set ablaze and destroyed. Dislocation, hunger and thirst follow, a prelude to famine and death. Abandoned, terrified, unprotected, unseen, the people despair. This is not a description of Gaza today. It’s Sudan, war-torn, desperate – and largely ignored. Upper estimates of the number of people killed there since a senseless civil war erupted just over one year ago reach 150,000. About 9 million residents, principally in the western Darfur region, have been displaced. Aid agencies say…

I recently found myself thinking about spiritual maturity and how my understanding of it was once a far cry from what the Bible says on the topic. Coming from a hyper-charismatic background, with its emphasis on sensationalism and the pursuit of spiritual “highs,” my perspective on spiritual maturity was distorted. Glossy visions, ecstatic utterances, and supernatural manifestations seemed to be the yardstick by which spiritual growth was measured. If the twenty-nine odd members of the Yoruba Nation self-determination group who stormed the Oyo State secretariat, Ibadan, in the early hours of Saturday April 13 go down in history, it will most certainly not be for their strategic genius. For a group with the apparent intention of taking over the secretariat as the opening gambit of a larger attempt to establish a breakaway Yoruba state, they could have done better than the skeletal masks which hardly did the job of disguising their identities and the five English Pump Action guns and three locally made barrel guns in their possession.…

At one point, he beckons over the captain, Genet Mekonen, who has been trailing at the back.“Why are you slowing down on the declines?” he asks her. “You need to be brave. Increase your speed, attack when you go downhill.”Genet peels off to rejoin the group at the front. Two days before their next race, Tadesse says he is happy. “You can see, on the hills, they move up as a team. They do not separate,…

Editors’ note:  TGC Africa believes in the power of “coalition.” To that end we delight in finding like-minded, Christ-centred ministries and movements across the continent, so that we might platform them and also promote greater synergy in service of God. One of Paul’s favourite analogies for the church was that of a body, which contains various parts that fulfil a host of important functions. Christianity across Africa is no different. No organisation can do everything, so it’s a joy to highlight others.   City to City Africa fosters the growth of urban gospel networks and assists church planters and ministry…
