Most travel to Africa to see the Big 5 on safari or the endangered mountain gorillas of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park as well as Mgahinga gorilla forest national park. But that doesn’t mean golf enthusiasts should miss out on adding truly brag-worthy golf experiences to their trips.

Recently with my friends we embarked on confirming how the golf courses in Uganda around the mighty mountain gorillas are. And yes they are very perfect and ready to go. On arrival everything seemed very perfect until we landed on the green, here my dia friend ReMikable had to ask“really” “and why are they all up ?” he was mesmerized by the course terrain and how much hazard was there.

But yes we had to play our round of 18 holes, am sure as all golfers know you have to play the course the way you find it. In the end we had to find out that the key for hitting the links are time management and where you stay. So we were not in a rush and had our exquisite eco lodge Embogo lodge set in for about 20 minutes’ drive from the course.

As we all know that golf cannot and does not use a standardized playing area, and coping with the varied terrains encountered on different courses is a key part of the game. While we sometimes get used to certain terrains when playing golf, Uganda golf courses are one of a kind for sure.

As the Golf book of rules states “Play the ball as it lies, play the course as you find it, and if you cannot do either, do what is fair.”

Flying out of Entebbe to land straight on the golf course and tee off immediately is a remarkable experience. Kihihi airstrip is located in south western Uganda a few kilometers from the extraordinary mountain gorillas in Bwindi impenetrable national park. One hour and ten minutes flying time from Entebbe.

Driving down the road will take about 10 hours’ drive to this airstrip and meaning tee off will be the next day.The airstrip is just on the course making it much easier and fun to play golf when not tired at all while using air. In the middle of lash green vegetation and hills, rivers flowing through the hills are quite remarkable.

Courses typically have either 9 or 18 holes, kihihi however is an 18 hole course and it was created to look like the regions of terrain. Each hole on a course has a teeing ground for the hole’s first stroke, and a putting green containing the cup. On this particular course however the greens are all high up like hills, this resembles the hilly area and prevents water from stagnating there.

There are several standard forms of terrain between the tee and the green, such as the fairway, rough (tall grass), and various hazards that include water, rocks, or sand-filled bunkers. Just like another golf course the kihihi course ( garuga golf course) is perfect for golfing.

Would you love to tee off while on gorilla trekking safari? Here to help you with that.
