The South African football fraternity is mourning the loss of 1996 Africa Cup of Nations winner John Moeti, who passed away at the age of 55 on Monday.

The former Orlando Pirates midfielder had been receiving specialist medical care for the past eight months after falling ill in 2022.

‘Dungi’ as he was affectionately known, skippered the Buccaneers to their maiden CAF Champions League title in 1995 before helping Bafana Bafana to continental glory on home soil the following year.

Moeti’s family confirmed his passing at home and stated that details of his funeral will be released in due course.

“It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we inform you of the passing of John ‘Dungi’ Moeti,” the family’s statement read.

“John was suddenly ill eight months ago and was receiving specialist medical care. John succumbed to his illness in the early hours of this morning (February 6) at home, surrounded by his family and brethren in prayer.

“We thank you sincerely for your prayers and steadfast support. The family wishes to be afforded privacy during this time of loss, and funeral details will be advised in due course.”

A statement from the Confederation of African Football added: “CAF is saddened by the passing of former Orlando Pirates captain and South Africa international John Moeti

“CAF conveys deepest condolences to Moeti’s family, South African football family and his friends during this difficult moment. May his soul rest in peace.”
