Mama Africa has been a beloved institution in Cape Town since 1995, offering a warm and welcoming space for locals and tourists alike to experience the diverse and vibrant flavours of Africa.

With its bright murals, lively music and inviting atmosphere, Mama Africa has become a must-visit spot on the bustling Long Street.

After a temporary closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Mama Africa has reopened under new ownership and with a sophisticated new look.

The decor now features a colour-changing chandelier made of glass bottles and a VIP lounge but still pays homage to the exposed brick walls and wooden roof that give a nod to the simpler Mama Africa of the past.

At Mama Africa, guests are invited to travel across the African continent with their tastebuds. From Nigeria to Zimbabwe, the menu features a range of traditional African dishes, prepared by chefs trained in traditional African cooking techniques using only the freshest and highest-quality ingredients.

Meat lovers will enjoy skewered goat with peppers or tender crocodile meat cooked in a peanut stew, while vegans can savour the moist and tasty chikanda, a Zambian dish made from peanuts and boiled root tubers of orchids.

Eating with your hands is encouraged at Mama Africa, so be prepared to get messy (in the best way). And while you savour your meal, be sure to listen to the live music performed by artists from all over Africa.

From djembe drumming on Thursdays to live reggae nights, Mama Africa is a hub for music and culture in the heart of Cape Town.

Whether you’re looking for a vibrant dinner spot, somewhere to end your night over drinks, or a place to experience the community and connection that comes with sharing a meal, Mama Africa is the perfect spot.
