The start of construction works of Terminal 5 at the Autonomous Port of Cotonou (PAC) in Benin is in the offing after the award of a Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for the project following an international call for tenders.
The contract was awarded by the Port of Cotonou Authority, which is in charge of operation and management of the port facility, to China Harbor Engineering Company LTD (CHEC) Group, which had in November 2019 won the geotechnical study contract for the same project.
Scope of the project
According to Van den Branden, the commercial and marketing director of the Autonomous Port of Cotonou, the content of the specifications indicates that CHEC, within the framework of the contract, will construct a new general wharf and form approximately 22 ha of new land in the sea from the current crossing.

It will also build two new berths with a total of 550 meters, widen the southern breakwater by 350 meters in a bid to protect the port from the sea, demolish the existing eastern breakwater and dredge the harbor basin among other works.
The project is expected to be carried out within a period is 30 months, excluding the 8-month preparation period.
Part of US$ 449M master plan
The construction of the 5th terminal at the PAC is part of a US$ 449M master plan that was developed back in 2018 after 2 years of preliminary study.
In addition to the construction of terminal 5, this master plan provides for the extension of the basin and renovation of the North Quay, creation of a buffer car park at Zongo, construction of centralized access in the port as well as the development of a logistics zone within the port enclosure.
